Giovanni Battista Piranesi () one of the greatest printmakers of the eighteenth century, soon after his arrival in Rome in apprenticed himself to the medium of etching at his master, Giuseppe Vasi. The knowledge of ancient building methods demonstrated by Piranesi's archaeological prints in his Antichità Romane of won him election to the Society of Antiquarians of London. Piranesi's etchings (which I love) are moody and atmospheric. I was hoping for a book which captured the force of the originals. Here, Taschen have printed as many of the etchings as humanly possible in a book which is, though thick, not very large. The result is that the prints are crammed in, too small, and one can neither see the detail nor Reviews:

With over pages and 1, illustrations, it is sure to become the definitive reference on this matter. Like Piranesi, Ricci lived in Venice, and was much influenced by the city’s artistic scene (before having to flee when he murdered a gondolier).
